In many DWI cases, the initial problem is that the person needed to drive at that time and they were not yet sober enough to do so legally. For instance, they were at the bar when the establishment closed, and they needed to drive home. They felt like they didn’t have a choice, so they decided to take the risk and drive.

In this situation, people sometimes try to use different tricks to sober up quickly. If they’re at home, they may take a cold shower. If they’re out on the town, they may go get a cup of coffee. People will also go to a diner or a restaurant and eat a large meal. But is any of this actually going to help?

These tricks will not get you out of charges

The thing to remember about any of these tactics is that they don’t change your BAC. If your BAC is over 0.08%, that means that that amount of alcohol is already in your bloodstream. It is illegal to drive in that condition, and a breath test would reveal your BAC level.

Showering, eating and drinking coffee cannot change your BAC after it has been elevated. Some of them can help you feel more alert or more awake. But they’re not actually going to change where you would register on a breath test. The only thing that can do that is time, as your BAC drops by 0.015% per hour. But there is nothing that you can do to speed up this process.
